A group of Michael Jackson fans calling themselves MJ Unity plan to hold a peaceful demonstration outside Sony's New York headquarters against what they see as a deliberate lack of promotion.
The group will gather outside the Sony Music Entertainment complex in New York at 12.30PM on July 6 whilst around the world, similar protests will take place in the UK, Europe and Latin America.
In a statement released to press, the group announces: "Our common bond is we are music lovers and Michael Jackson fans who will not tolerate Sony Music's handling of 'Invincible' and Mr Jackson's career."
"We have been loyal consumers and have supported Sony Music with our hard-earned money for more than a decade."
The group argue that Sony have not produced any of Jackson's "signature big budget videos and there has been little push from Sony Music to radio despite demand."
Crucially, they argue that this apparently illogical approach to marketing an artist stems from a more sinister root.
They claim that Sony wishes to acquire sole ownership of Jackson's ATV music catalogue, which numbers amongst its publishing rights music by The Beatles.
The suggestion is that the label is attempting to prohibit Jackson from recouping the costs of producing 'Invincible' in order to ensure that he is not in a fit position to quit the label, taking with him the huge income that Sony makes from its 50 percent share of the ATV catalogue.
Amongst the evidence with which they claim to support this interpretation of events is upheld the delayed and then indefinitely postponed commercial release of the single 'Butterflies' and so-called "mysterious" removal of 'Heavan Can Wait' from Sony's release schedule.
They also point to cancelled public appearances like Jackson's scheduled slot at the 2002 Grammy Award which was filled at the last minute by India.Aire.
Referring to this incident it is said: "Sources claim that Michael Jackson refused to perform as he was pressured into performing old songs only."
